JAN 15, 2020 | Light snow WI; Freezing Rain Possible South on Wednesday

LAST UPDATE : JAN 15, 2020

TUES 9:30PM UPDATE - A disjointed system will bring snow to WI on Wednesday and a wintry mix/freezing rain south. The event will begin around 8 AM in western/southern WI and will end during the day. Possibly light snow/flurries lingering into the overnight in the northern half of WI.

LIGHT SNOW - So the forcing that produces the snow in southern WI will not be in sync with the snow diving east through far northern WI/upper MI. There could be a decent sized dry air pocket across northern WI and associated rift in snow accumulations where nothing falls. About half the models do produce snow so I just covered the whole area with 0-1" zone and will use labels to communicate. Around 1" of snow is likely across southern WI coming out of a wintry mix regime originating from the south.

1-3" is likely across far northern WI/upper Michigan. Models are not totally in agreement on location. I blended them a little but leaned a little further north with EC/NAM models. As I mentioned before...just south of this feature could be a dry air rift with no snow. So it's going to be interesting. Probably splitting hairs here. (see maps)

Freezing Rain/Wintry Mix southern WI - Ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch generally south of Prairie Du Chien/ I-94, perhaps mixed with sleet/ice pellets. Mainly travel issues hence the Winter Weather Advisory. The timing is kind of during and after the morning commute. Temps are forecast to be between 29 and 32F during the mid to late morning hours. The NAM generally keeps temps below freezing across the icy glaze region(see map) so although it's daytime; it COULD be an issue throughout the day. I predict the urban warm areas of southeast WI will not have much ice...but the burbs and non-urban areas may be susceptible.
